Near famously scanned some 1,200 Super Nintendo games, down to their circuit boards, in pursuit of long-term preservation and truly cycle-accurate emulation that covered all possible edge cases. Near, who has also gone by the name byuu, has reportedly died. Near rose to prominence in 2004 with the creation of bsnes (later renamed higan), which quickly grew to become the single most accurate emulator of Nintendo’s 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The emulation and fan localization communities are seeing an outpouring of memorials and grief today after the reported death of Near, who was the force behind both the BSNES emulator and the Bahamut Lagoon fan translation. Then, early this morning, well-known security consultant and hacker Hector “Marcan” Martin shared a Google document (content warning: contains explicit details) said to be authored by a real-life friend of Near’s, which is widely being accepted as proof of their death. Though Byuu did suffer from different afflictions, this news came as a surprise to many around the web, resulting in widespread discussion surrounding his death. Back in March, Vice Games published a report on Near’s perfectionist quest to locate Bahamut Lagoon, a 16-bit cult RPG that never made it to North America. In commemoration of their contributions to the emulation community, Ars Technica published an article by Near that looked at coding the BSNES and how SNES emulators could get “a few pixels out of complete perfection”. One of their achievements is the distortion-free overclocking of the virtual SNES processor with spectacular results.
